Then all authors of the book (present) were introduced and invited to the stage along with the Honorable Chief guest Natalie Hutchins- MP and Guest of Honor Vivienne Nguyen for the release of the book. After the launch of the book, short speeches were delivered by our respected and honourable Guest and other guests. Some of the books were handed over to various libraries including State library, Glenroy library, and Merri Bek library. For the handover, Councillors Mark Riley, Sue Bolton and Monica Harte and DBSV advisor were dually invited onto the dais. The book launch also included a blur reading and a brief overview of the book. The session was initiated and facilitated by Roshan Bhandary (DBSV Advisor). For this purpose, four blur readers were Dr Tilak Pokhrel (Nepali story), Barsha KC Rajbhandary, Prabha Shrestha and Geeta Thapa Chhetri.

As the book launch program was one of the DBSV’s campaigns of 16 Days of activism, a short video on DBSV’s work in the past years on raising awareness against family violence was screened. The video reflected various programs and campaigns organised by DBSV from the year 2017 to the present day. The video also highlighted DBSV’s commitment to advocating for women and women-related issues. Technically, Mr Anuj Nepal supported the overall process. And at the end of the program, a brief info video of DBSV work for the last 10 years was also screened, as we celebrate the completion of our 10 years of community work this year. After the screening of the video, the vote of thanks was delivered by Roshani Shrestha, DBSV West Unit Co-ordinator. The light refreshment (from Lumanti), photoshoot and videography (Hemanta Shrestha – Wedding Diaries), feedback and video recording from respectable guests and participants (by Barsha KC Rajbhandary- DBSV executive member and DBSV Melton Unit Coordinator) were some of the other highlights of the launch event.
Overall, the event ended with positive remarks and feedback from all the respected attendees of the program. With all positive remarks and with 100 books being distributed and more enthusiasm to grab the book, the book launch was observed as a success.

DBSV Youth M3 Zone Project 2022

From the 9th of July till the 13th of August DBSV organised fun and interactive youth community sessions. It occurred on every Saturday, spanning six weeks at the Uniting Church of Glenroy. The aim of the program was to bring young people together and discuss challenging questions; something that doesn’t occur frequently in public schools. Coupled with that were activities such as Zumba, icebreakers and meditation. Main themes were

Week 1: Knowing yourself
Week 2: Your culture; and your strengths
Week 3: Culture and your Personal Growth
Week 4: Your Culture and identity and gender awareness
Week 5: Team building, trust, and mutual respect
Week 6: Emotion, and interpersonal relationship

One of the questions discussed was ‘What does well-being mean to me? Well-being can have many different interpretations by different types of people. Some of the answers we received were health, security, purpose, and many more. What followed this was a long discussion about the various concepts. It was very insightful to hear differing opinions from people of different generations and cultures. The idea of well-being and living a meaningful life seems to be an inspiring idea.
One of the other activities we did was goal setting. It was very practical and gave people a chance to think and plan their futures. Research shows, people who regularly set and review goals are more likely to live a more fulfilling life. Due to the variation in age, there were vastly different goals. There were some that wanted to learn to cook, enhance their technical knowledge and even buy a house!
Every session started off with a fast-paced Zumba class. Far and away the most popular activity, taught by the exceptional Anna. Zumba is a Latin Inspired dance fitness, where the participants follow the lead of the instructor. At first glance it looks simple and straightforward- it is anything but that. We learnt something new, improved our cardiovascular levels, improved coordination and by the end of the 6th week, we got better at it. What was a delight to see was that even the shyest of us were moving and jumping around. The effects of Zumba were great and should be brought into future community events.
There were activities that were spiritual. Yogis and meditation gurus taught us about the value of mindfulness and happiness. Mindfulness is being aware of the present situation which can reduce anxiety, stress and worry.
Team building exercises demonstrated the power of cooperation. Chinese whispers are a much harder game than it seems!
Overall, the event was a great success. It provided value that can be used beyond the contexts of the programme.

DBSV TEEJ Celebration 2022

‘DBSV Teej Celebration 2022’ – “Preserving Culture- Raising Hope”.

About this event: Since 2014 every year DBSV has been celebrating Teej as a part of the DBSV’s vision to promote Nepalese culture and tradition here in Australia. Teej is the most famous festival among Nepali women. Given that we strive to celebrate Teej to provide an opportunity for all women to enjoy their womanhood, the richness of cultural essence and diversity through dancing and singing. Moreover, we endeavour to support women to boost their confidence and well-being with a dance performance and to enhance the spirit of unity among women. While we are celebrating our wonderful festival here in Australian land, we are also aiming to support vulnerable women in the Mid-western region of Nepal with the theme of Preserving Culture Raising Hope.

Through the Teej event, we also aim to raise hope and endowment to assist women in Nepal who are victims/survivors of sexual assault and rape. We intend to reintegrate those women and girls into society to prevent further exploitation and to curtail the risks of assaults, emotional abuse, neglect, and violence from society.

DBSV is so proud that we were able to support and restore the lives of more than 110 women and girls in the Mid-western region of Nepal through our last 7 Teej events. Hence, part of the fund raised from the event has been donated every year to support the same cause on an ongoing basis. Our support would bear the cost for the provision of safe short-term crisis accommodation, and support for other essential services such as legal advice, medical treatment, counselling, family, and social mediation process, and vocational education. For the provision of these services, we are closely working in partnership with AAWAJ (a profound local NGO working in family violence in the Mid-Western Region of Nepal). DBSV highly believes that our commitment to support signifies a lot to raising new hope and aspirations in the lives of those women and girls in Nepal and on the other hand rendering lots of satisfaction among women (Teej-celebrants) here in Australia.

Like every year, this year DBSV Teej Celebration was held on 19th August 2022 at Coburg Townhall, at 4:30 pm with the presence of more than 500 Nepalese women and distinguished guests from different local bodies.

Event Purpose:
* To provide an opportunity for all women to enjoy womanhood and the richness of cultural essence and diversity through dancing, singing, cultural performances, and connection.
* To support vulnerable women in the Mid-western region of Nepal with the theme of Preserving Culture Raising Hope. Hence, part of the fund raised from the event will be donated to support survivors of sexual assault and its prevention in Nepal.

Event Highlights: Cultural dance performances by various unit groups and group floor dance, music, free Photo booth, free instant photo printing service, free face painting and kids’ engagement, traditional Teej show by Ama-haru (elder mothers) and Authentic Nepalese food, a showcase of cultural clothes, ornaments and jewellery.
This 2022 Teej celebration happened to be more special than previous as this time DBSV heartily welcome men as well to promote the brotherhood not only the sisterhood or to strengthen the bond between sisterhood and brotherhood. This 2022 Teej event focused on each age group people. There was a separate entertainment section for the child that includes face painting and other recreational activities.

The feedback from event participants and their engagements, joy specifies a high level of happiness and gratitude. There were many positive remarks about the DBSV Teej celebration, the objectives behind the celebration, and the organization, structure and process of the program.

DBSV Two-Day Mother’s Day Retreat Program 2022

Didi Bahini Samaj Victoria (DBSV) organized a two-day Women’s retreat program from 27 to 28th May 2022 in honour of Mother’s Day. 53 enthusiastic Nepalese sisters participated in the program including the DBSV program organising committee team members. The program involved one night’s stay at Halls Gap, which is a village in Victoria, Australia. It is a gateway to Grampians National Park, known for its sandstone mountains, wildflowers and wildlife including echidnas and wallabies. Park trails lead to waterfalls, such as MacKenzie Falls, Silverband Falls and Clematis Falls Walk. This landscape of Halls Gap was similar to our country, Nepal

The main theme of the program was “Beyond Happiness”.

The main objectives of a two-day retreat program were to promote well-being and self-care strategies among sisters through Meditation, and thematic talks, build a network and connection among diverse Nepalese sisters living in Victoria and provide recreation and entertainment through activities such as dancing, cooking sessions, social media engagement and fun activities sessions, understand and highlight the importance of nature by engaging in activities such as forest walking, nature trails and fire camping sessions and to empower independence in sisters by engaging in meaningful conversations, team-building exercises and through the Beyond Happiness sessions.

DBSV’s two-day retreat program included various activities to achieve the program activities including innovative introduction sessions, a brief session about happiness hormones followed by an online session about happiness and well-being talks, a nature walk, meditation, dance, music and many more.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their time away in the Australian bush and participation in the activities. It reaffirmed DBSV’s commitment through activities to its objectives, values and guiding principles for focusing on its endeavours.

The three survey results show how much participants enjoyed and benefited from this trip.

More details are to be provided in the final report.

Quiz competition among the kids aged between 5-11 years old | 2022

Didi Bahini Samaj Victoria (DBSV) successfully organised a quiz competition program among kids aged between 5 and 11 years old on the 4th of June 2022 at Glenroy Uniting Church, Glenroy, Victoria. The program was proudly funded by FECCA Small grant Victoria. The major theme of the quiz competition was Covid-19 and vaccination education and awareness. Based on the major theme of the program, the majority of the questions were focused on COVID 19 and COVID 19 vaccination. Hence, the overall objective of the program was to increase the awareness of COVID 19 vaccination among kids and as well as among adult community members including parents.

Furthermore, emphasis was given to the two doses of COVID 19 vaccination among kid groups aged 5-11 years by providing guidance and information on vaccination. More than 90% of the questions from the quiz program were targeted on the COVID 19 vaccination, its importance, procedures, side effects, efficacy, vaccination centres and providers, and covered the COVID 19 infections. A total of 100 questions were prepared in three rounds: Questions in the first round were based on COVID 19 vaccinations only, the second round consisted of questions related to the COVID 19 infections and hygiene-related questions, and the last/third round consisted of general knowledge questions. Quiz questions were carefully designed by a core team of four members (experienced in COVID 19 and its vaccination) from DBSV with careful consideration of the knowledge level and age group of the participants.

Around 30 kids participated in the quiz competition and the program ran for around three hours. The team members were grouped prior to the competition and each team consisted of team members from different aged groups. All the groups had the team members from the 5-to 11 years, to make the competition fairer and more relevant There were in total six groups including five participants in each group (Groups name: Delta, Omicron, Deltacorn, Alpha, SARS and COVID). As the quiz competition was noted to be the first kids’ focused program among Nepalese community members, all the kids and parents were very excited and actively engaged throughout the program.

The first and second winning teams were declared at the end of the program based on their scores in front of everyone. Both winners were awarded trophies and gift cards. Additionally, all the 30 participants got the certificate of participation and a water bottle with DBSV/FECCA logos and a COVID 19 vaccination message. Overall, all the kids and parents enjoyed the whole program with lots of messages and awareness on COVID 19 vaccination. The Facilitators (Mr Chhavi Raman Chaulagain and Mr Ananta Homagain) and the panel members (Dr Jamuna Parajuli, President DBSV and Reeta Lamichhane, program Coordinator) answered the questions raised during the sessions. The questions were simplified to make everyone understand and translated to the Nepalese language where needed. Furthermore, all the posters from the “Kids Art Activities” on 23rd April 2022 were displayed around the hall. Kids were happy to see their art and some of them took it home saying that they wanted to keep their art with them at home. Moreover, the posters with information on RAT testing, COVID 19 vaccination, and COVID 19 infection in the Nepalese language were displayed around the hall. The RAT kits were also distributed among the attendees at the end of the session.

Nearly 80 people actively attended the program including 30 participants from the Nepalese community from all around Melbourne. Parents have thanked DBSV for organising such a creative and knowledge-based program for kids, and have also encouraged to continue such a highly effective program for the kids regularly in future. It was a mix of fun, achievement, learning, socialising and creative thinking. It was a successful team activity from DBSV and FECCA small grant for the Nepalese community in Victoria. DBSV would like to heartily thank all the parents who attended the program and brought their children to the quiz program.

COVID-19 Vaccination Education via ‘KIDS ART ACTIVITIES’ 2022

Kids Art Activities

COVID -19 vaccination Education and Awareness via Kids art Activities

DBSV organised a Kids’ art activity program proudly funded by FECCA small grant, Victoria on 23rd April 2022 at Coburg Lake Park, North Coburg, Victoria. This program was conducted to increase awareness and understanding of COVID 19 and its vaccination among the aged group 5 and 11 years old, and their parents. Nearly 100 people participated in the program including 45 kids aged 5-11 years old.

All the kids actively participated in the art activities to draw a portrait of their understanding of COVID 19 and its vaccination and how it has impacted their childhood via the art. Surprisingly, most of the kids have a basic understanding of the COVID 19 virus, its symptoms, hand hygiene and mask. Some of them also illustrated the COVID 19 vaccination in their portray. One of the kids explained how hard it was to do homeschooling and then to go back to school with a mask when it opened, and she explained it through her drawing.  In the same program, kids also played a hot potato game with a spiky ball assuming the ball is COVID 19 virus, and no one likes it, so whoever gets the ball has to pass it to another person so that they don’t get the virus. Music was played and when stopped, whoever has the ball was out of the game. The last three winners were recognised with some gifts for their encouragement and their active participation. It was a mix of fun and education for kids. Hand hygiene was reminded in-between the game.

At the same event, the program coordinator Ms Reeta Lamichhane demonstrated the RAT testing procedure focusing on the correct way of testing without contamination, its time and reporting when tested positive. Additionally, Ms Kamala Homagain (Immuniser and COVID 19 vaccinator from DPV health) provided education on COVID 19 vaccination (second and booster dose, vaccination sites and booking, managing minor side effects, and reporting the adverse events if happened), especially for the kid’s aged group between 5-11 years old. She also addressed the questions raised by the parents regarding the vaccination.

Overall, the program was highly effective in ensuring all the community people have a good understanding of the COVID 19 vaccination. Especially children were very excited as this was the only program focusing on kids of this age group where they can play, laugh, run, educate, and share their experiences. One of the parents said “thank you for organising this art activity, my daughter is very happy to participate in this art program. I wasn’t aware that she has the talent to show her understanding via art. In the beginning, I was thinking it is just the usual kids’ activity, but found kids are very creative and talented to be able to transform their feelings via art”. Most of the parents were grateful to see their kid’s active participation and to visualise their art along with education and awareness.
